What is Air Source Heat Pump?

Air Source Heat Pump Water Heater is a revolution in renewable hot water technology. It is considered to be one of the most energy efficient method of heating water. Approximately 75% of total heat energy generated is absorbed from ambient air & 25% from electricity. It uses a refrigerant system involving a compressor and a condenser to absorb heat from atmosphere and release it to water for heating.

The performance of a heat pump is measured under standard conditions as the ’Coefficient of Performance’ , this measures the heat output in kilowatts in relation to the electrical input in kilowatts. The COP of Air Source Heat Pump is between 3.5 to 4 which means, it produces 3.5 to 4 units energy by consuming 1 unit of electricity. This factor makes it the most efficient and high energy saving device compared to any other heating system like Gas boilers, Electrical Geyser etc.

How does it work?
  • Heat from Ambient Air is absorbed by evaporator coils containing refrigerant at low pressure and low temperature.
  • Due to heat absorption the refrigerant boils and vaporises.
  • After passing through compressor, the refrigerant attains high temperature & high pressure and enters into condenser with heat exchanger.
  • While condensing, the refrigerant transfers heat to the water in Heat Exchanger and thus loses its temperature.
  • The refrigerant further loses its pressure & temperature while passing through expansion valve and enters evaporator chamber. Thus, the cycle repeats.
